About The Thomson Monument

On a hill south west of Ednam stands a monument to James Thomson, who was born in in Ednam in 1700, the son of Ednam’ s minister. Thomson began writing poetry as a young student at Edinburgh University. In 1725 he went to London where he became well known for his poetic works. His major work – “The Seasons” was considered a masterpiece, and the forerunner of the Romantic Movement in poetry. Parts of it were set to music by Haydn. However, today he is chiefly remembered as the author of “Rule Britannia”.
