Important reiver towers have vanished under indeterminate mounds and the stones taken to build sheep stells, themselves aften lost amongst the new forests. Even the names have largely been forgotten or lost in Anglicising ie Puddingburn has become Paddington.

Further on is the planned village of Newcastleton. It was planned by the Third Duke of Buccleuch in 1793 to counter the Clearances in the Borders. In the Liddesdale Heritage Centre, the history of the Liddel Valley and its people is portrayed together with books and articles of that part of the Borders
