About Lauder

Lauder is a market town situated on the Leader Water on the western edge of the Lammermuir Hills, 22 miles south east of Edinburgh. It maintains the layout of and ancient Scottish burgh. A great activity for visitors is the Lauder Town Trail which is designed to let people learn about the local Town history at the same time as absorbing the scenic backdrop of the town. The area is also popular with walkers as the Southern Upland Way long distance routes pass near by the town.

The town is also home to the Borders Common Riding festivals. Held on the first Saturday in August, some of the most anticipated events include the Annual Election of the Cornet, the 'Kirking of the Cornet', and the ‘Night afore the Morn’ Concert.

The town is home to the Scots Baronial Thirlestane Castle, named as one of the seven ‘Great Houses in Scotland’. It is still home to the Maitland family and retains much of its 16th century charm. It is popular among tourists when it opens its doors to visitors, usually from April to September .
