About Thirlestane Castle

Thirlestane Castle nestles in the hills of the beautiful Scottish Borders just 35 minutes south of Edinburgh in the charming town of Lauder.

Dating from 1590, it is the ancient seat of the Earls and Duke of Lauderdale and continues to be the Maitland family home.

Marvel at the exquisite 17th-century plasterwork ceilings and examine one of the largest collections of family portraits in the country. Visit the room where Bonnie Prince Charlie stayed and explore the extensive historic toy collection.

Extend your time at the castle by staying in one of our five luxury apartments which are furnished with an eclectic mix of contemporary and historic items from the castle collection. You can even take exclusive use of the whole castle for an extra special experience.

We are accredited Information partners of VisitScotland and can offer tailored advice to help you make the most of your visit. Come in and have a chat for insider tips about the must see attractions in our local area.
