About Yetholm

The area of Yetholm actually consists of two small villages - Kirk Yetholm and Town Yetholmm, sitting only a mile from the border with England. The two twin villages lie either side of the valley of the Bowmont Water. Most of the valley of the Bowmont Water lies in England.

The name Yetholm means "Gate Town", originating from the villages being geographical ‘gates’ at the border. The history of battles and turbulence at the border has meant that permanent settlement in Yetholm most likely would not have started until the end of the 1500s.

More recently, Kirk Yetholm has also become a feature on the St Cuthbert's Way, a 62 mile walk following in the footsteps of St Cuthbert from Melrose to Lindisfarne.
