About Widows and Bairns Sculpture

Black Friday, as the day is known locally, occurred on 14 October 1881 saw the death of 189 fisherman leaving 78 widows and '182 bairns' fatherless after being caught in storm the Berwickshire coast. The fisherman also came from nearby villages: Burnmouth, St Abbs and Cove.
The monument was commissioned to sculptor Jill Watson who included the exact number of women and children. Each are bronze figure is of a real person and their name and age is recorded.
