This is a spectacular viewpoint, with the Borders laid out before you. The track that joins the road here is Dere Street, a Roman road. This passed through the Cheviot Hills on its way from York to Cramond, near Edinburgh.
Ogilvie was a lover of the hills – particularly the Cheviots and he appreciated the health benefits of a day in the hills, as he states in The Comfort of the Hills
