About Thornhill

The town of Thornhill sits south of Sanquhar and north of Dumfries on the main A76 road. It was initially a small village built in 1717 on the Queensberry Estate, that The Earl of Queensberry named the village 'New Dalgarnock'. This name did not achieve popular approval. The village today has a bowling green, squash court and a golf course. It is also a popular fishing spot, due to the nearby River Nith and tributaries. Thornhill also good selection of shops, accommodation and places to eat and drink. The popular independent arts organisation CAMPLE LINE, is two miles outside of Thornhill.

The town is near the 17th century Drumlanrig Castle. Once a stronghold of the Douglas Clan stronghold, it is now home to the Duke of Buccleuch and Queensberry.
