Exploring the rich history of Stranraer gives an insight into the strategic importance of the town through the centuries. The imposing medieval tower house, Castle of St John, in the town centre tells the story of the Covenanters and provides super views of the town and Loch Ryan beyond. In recent years the waterfront has proven a popular draw for visitors. Hidden beneath the waters of Loch Ryan is an ecological treasure – a wild, native oyster bed, the only one of significant size left in the UK. The local oysters are the focal point of Stranraer Oyster Festival, a major event attracting thousands of people that takes place each September on the waterfront. Other popular events include Stranraer agricultural show, and the new Scottish Fin & Foil windsurfing championships.

Thanks to the Gulf Stream, Stranraer has an unusually warm climate, with palm trees growing along the waterfront.
