About Sprouston

Sprouston is a small village and former feudal barony, located 2 miles north-east of Kelso. It lies close to the south bank of the river Tweed. Sprouston was a Royal Manor in the 12th century and the original parish church was founded around this time. Land around Sprouston was granted to the monks of Selkirk (later Kelso) Abbey and in the 12th century the monks had a brewery there. It is clear from 18th and 19th century maps that the village was much larger in the past; a fact confirmed by recent archaeological excavations.
