About Philiphaugh Battle Memorial

James Graham, 1st Marquis of Montrose, initially supported the Covenanters and lead them to victory but switched sides when he became convinced that they wanted nothing short of a Republic and the death of the King. This conflict forms the background to "Witch Wood". Buchan wrote a biography of Montrose in 1913 – Buchan describes him as a figure akin to Hamlet, an introspective and complex individual, and a man more devoted to principles than notions of chivalry or reckless heroism.
