About Philiphaugh Battle Memorial

Here in 1645. the Marquis of Montrose was defeated after six brilliant victories. This was to be the beginning of the end for the Royalist Cause in the Civil War. The battle was horrifyingly bloody with women camp-followers and children being slaughtered without mercy. Montrose was later captured and hanged.

‘He either fears his fate too much
Or fears it not at all
Who dares not put it to the touch
To win or lose it all.’
Montrose on the eve of his execution

‘At Philiphaugh the fray began
At Harcheid Wood it ended’
