The memorial stone was placed by the Montrose Society in May 2013, to commemorate the Battle of Philiphaugh which took place on 13th September 1645. A Covenanter army led by General Sir David Leslie defeated a Royalist army led by the Marquis of Montrose. A plaque is inscribed with the following:

"This plaque is placed here in
memory of all those who
fought and died at the
Battle of Philiphaugh
13th September 1645
May we never be touched by the scourge
of civil war again
Ne Oublie"
