Newstead is a village approximately 1 mile east of Melrose. It is thought to be the oldest continually-inhabited settlement in Scotland. Situated in the valley of the River Tweed, it's crossing point for the Roman Dere Street strategic important throughout history, along with the close proximity of the prominent Eildon Hill. Former inhabitants include: the ancient Selgovae, the Roman army at Trimontium, and monks and masons, the builders of nearby Melrose Abbey.
