About Mote of Mark

Just a short detour from the foot path, the Mote of Mark is an Ancient monument which occupies the summit of a low hill above the Urr Estuary. It takes its name form Mark, King of Dumnonia and was occupied around the 6th century but destroyed by fire in the 7th century. Excavations at the site have revealed trading contacts with France and the Mediterranean over 1500 years ago. It now provides a magnificent viewpoint with superb views of the Rough Firth and across the wider Solway to the mountains of the Lake District.
