About Merkland Cross

The Merkland Cross is one of the best preserved medieval wayside crosses in Scotland. There are a range of local traditions regarding its origins, one of which says it marks the site where a member of the Maxwell family was violently killed.

The cross itself stands 3m high, and its tapered shaft and flower-shaped head have been carved from a single block of stone.
