St Mary's Abbey, a monastery of the Cistercian order in Melrose, the proximity Abbotsford and Chiefswood - home of daughter and her husband meant that Scott and his family were almost daily visitors to town.

About Melrose Abbey

In 1822 Scott persuaded the Duke of Buccleuch to pay for the removal five feet of rubbish from the Melrose Abbey floor and to forbid the people the town from using the fabric of the building as a convenient quarry
