About Melrose Abbey

Today Melrose is a visitor’s dream with history and culture galore. The picturesque town is located next to the River Tweed at foot of the triple peaks of the Eildon Hills. The area has been inhabited since the Romans arrived in AD79 or 80 and built a fort nearby named Trimontium. However as is so often the case, one’s perception of a place can be made, or indeed dampened by the weather. So it was for Burns and Melrose. The weather had taken a turn and was wet and cold for May and his remarks reflected this: “the whole country hereabout, both on Tweed and Ettrick remarkably Melrose Abbey stony”
