About Kirkmaiden Old Kirk

Built in1638 to replace St Catherine’s at the Mull of Galloway, Kirkmaiden Old Kirk lies in the most southerly parish in Scotland , on Core Hill a mile above the village of Drummore. Its creation was due to the parishioners complaining about the inconvenience of their journey to church, wanting a more local place to worship. At the time, this new church was known as Kirk Covenant, with the patron being the Earl of Stair.

The building is T-shaped, with vaults of the McDouall family of Logan underneath the balcony. The graveyard has fine 18th century gravestones including one in the form of a lighthouse. The church is still in use today.
