About Kilmorie Stone Cross

This stone dates back to the 9th or 10th century and was thought to have been discovered at Kilmorie Chapel around 1719. It is believed it was then taken to the old church at Kirkcolm and left there even after the church was dismantled in 1821, until it was eventually moved to the garden of Corsewall House.

The most recent move of the slab was in 1987 when it was transferred to its current location at the modern Kirkcolm church and given a new base. Dr. Derek Craig of the Corpus of Anglo Saxon Stone Sculpture examined the stone in 1992, describing how it had a roll moulding, depicting four different serpentine creatures, their bodies forming interlacing.
