Kirkpatrick Macmillan, inventor of the pedal driven bicycle, lived in Courthill Smithy, where there is a plaque to commemorate his life. He is buried in the parish church, a Gothic style building built dating back to 1815.

A Kirkpatrick Macmillan Cycle Rally takes place each year, normally at the end of May.
