About James Hogg monument

The monument was unveiled in 28 June 1860 in honour of The Ettrick Shepherd, James Hogg, a local poet, novelist and essayist who lived 1770- 21 November 1835.
He worked as a shepherd from the age of 7 and self educated himself, publishing his literature whilst working on the land during his lifetime.
The statue overlooks one of his favourite spots overlooking both lochs and also the now closed Tibbie Shiels Inn where he would meet his friend, Sir Walter Scott.
