About HatchBurnCarve

Martin Wilson is an artist, crafter and writer based in the Scottish Borders. He works with slate and stone, creating finely carved pieces from materials that would otherwise end up as landfill. As well as using reclaimed stone as a medium, many of Martin’s pieces are made from natural materials carefully and respectfully sourced from his journeys around the country. He makes a wide range of pieces, from slate coasters to garden stones and works of art.
Using his knowledge and skills, Martin has created Buddhist garden installations from reclaimed slate cladding, gravestones from old snooker table bases and everything from placemats to works of art from ‘waste’ roofing slate.
Martin’s work has been exhibited in galleries across Scotland. The first piece he created (‘Stream of Knowledge’) won the Creative Place award at an exhibition in Peebles in 2014. Martin draws inspiration from his life-long fascination with folklore, magick, archaeology and symbolism.
His work is truly handcrafted, from cutting slate and stone, to freehand carving using a variety of Foredom, Proxxon and Dremel tools, as well as traditional hammer and chisel.
Martin is the only person in the UK who carves and sells Buddhist mantra and symbol stones. He supplies the shop at Kagyu Samye Ling Monastery (the largest Tibetan Buddhist centre in Western Europe based in Dumfries and Galloway) as well as Kagyu Samye Dzong in London.
He is part of the creative team at Talliston House & Gardens (‘Britain’s most extraordinary home’ based in Essex) and a member of ‘Animus- Art for the World Soul’ artist’s collective.
