About Cruggleton Castle

Cruggleton Castle sits on Cruggleton Point, around 4.5 kilometres east of Whithorn. Excavations in the 1970s and 1980s revealed several periods of use, from the 1st century AD to the 17th century. The first stone tower is thought to have been built in the 13th century.
The name "Cruggleton" is thought to derive from the rocky nature of the site. The castle is accessible along a coastal path from the grounds of nearby Galloway House. Little exact details are known about the keepers of the castle, but it has thought to be ruined since 1684. The ruins are a scheduled monument.
