About Coalmarket

This is where the people of Kelso would buy coal which had been carted from Scremerston, 38km (24 miles) away in Northumberland. Sadly, this area is now a busy road junction and has lost its sense of enclosure. The modern buildings do not add greatly to the architectural quality of the area but the older ones help retain a sense of dignity. Among these are the late Georgian corner house and the Wagon Inn. The latter was used by the coal-carriers who took coal from the station to Coalmarket.
