About Border Gate

This is the closest parking spot as you cannot drive to Border Gate (Grid Ref: NT871160) but it is a lovely walk of around 6km there and back with an ascent of just over 300m. Follow the road that forks off to the right. Please ensure you are suitably dressed and have a compass and map with you.
You would be walking on Clennel Street, an ancient hill track through the Cheviots. The area abounds in evidence of previous occupation – hill forts, settlements, tracks, etc. At Border Gate you will be standing on the Border between Scotland and England. A place where, in the past, Wardens of the Marches -the men appointed to keep the peace in the area - would meet to settle disputes – sometimes with violent consequences.
