About Traquair House

Traquair is Scotland's Oldest Inhabited House. Originally a royal hunting lodge, Traquair dates back to 1107 and has been lived in by the Stuart family since 1491. The 21st Laird, Catherine Maxwell Stuart, lives in the House today.

Traquair has played host to 27 Kings and Queens, with strong associations to Mary Queen of Scots and supporters of the Jacobite cause. The famous Bear Gates were closed behind Bonnie Prince Charlie in 1745 never to be opened until a Stuart King returned to the throne.

Today we welcome visitors from all over the world who enjoy the extraordinary history of Traquair. Visitors can roam in the extensive woodlands and enjoy the largest hedged maze in Scotland, view our world famous Brewery and sample ales in the shop. And even stay in one of our 3 exclusive B&B guest rooms.

A unique location set in the beautiful Tweed Valley.
