The Whithorn Trust

STARTS HERE

The Whithorn Trust

Visit the Priory Museum to see the earliest Christian stone in Scotland which demonstrates literacy and contact with the Roman world in around 450AD. View the Celtic knotwork of the Whithorn School crosses and hear about links with the famous Galloway Hoard!
Our Iron Age roundhouse is built at full-scale, using evidence from excavation of a 13m original from around 430BC close by: you can hear about daily life in the Scottish Iron Age and how we constructed our replica from our expert guides. They'll show you how we're reviving ancient crafts and providing youth opportunities today.

About The Whithorn Trust

Whithorn is an internationally important archaeological site, associated with the earliest evidence of Christianity anywhere in Scotland. Here, at the Whithorn Trust visitor centre and Whithorn Priory, you can see 1600 years of occupation and settlement - from the earliest Christian stone in Scotland through Viking-era carvings to the most popular pilgrimage centre of the Middle Ages. Our site includes an exhibition, visiting objects from National Museums Scotland, a museum of carved Christian stones, and an outdoor tour of a full-scale Iron Age roundhouse with our expert guides. Whithorn is in rural western Galloway, within 1 hour from Cairnryan ferry port, 2 hours from Carlisle and 2 hours 20 from Glasgow. We are able to tailor your visit according to your client group, from archaeology and early crafts to Celtic Christianity and the age of pilgrimage. Hands-on experiences of early construction are available, with our experts and trainees!
