Reston Circular

A pleasant circular from the village of Reston including the Eye Water and some interesting built heritage.

Reston lies north-east of Chirnside on the Eye Water on the road to Coldingham.

Leave the car park at Reston and turn left toward the A1. Cross over the Eye Water (which flows 35km from the Lammermuir Hills to Eyemouth), turn left down the steps, and pass through two gates.

Follow the banks of the Eye Water for 350m along a grass track to reach a play park and picnic area.

Cross the bridge on your left and go up the steps. Exit onto the main street and turn right. After 150m, you pass Reston’s Parish Church. Built in 1880, its interior is unique for retaining box pews on either side of the pulpit—a feature removed from most Scottish churches in late Victorian times.

Continue 350m along the pavement and cross over the main east coast railway line. Pass the Primary School on your right and, after 100m, take the tarmac road on the left toward Newmains Farm.

Follow this road uphill. After 570m, pass Loanside Holding; 250m further, you cross the dismantled Berwickshire Railway. Continue for 500m into Newmains Farm (a working farm).

You have two options to return:

Option A (Shorter/Muddy): Turn left and follow a grass track for 700m (becoming stone for the final 500m) back into Reston. Turn right at the junction to find the car park.
Option B (Road): Turn right and follow the track to the minor road heading into Reston. Go through the farm gate, turn left, and follow the road for 700m under the East Coast railway line. Turn right at the junction back to the car park.
