Hutton Circular

Walking

A pleasant circular walk through riverside woodland and along country roads. Hutton is a small settlement lying east of Chirnside by the Whiteadder Water.

Its church was dedicated in 1243 and up until 1652 people brought their own seats to sit on. It is a notable Romanesque Revival building.

Hutton lies 3 miles south-east of Chirnside. It is not on the route but has a variety of facilities.

From Hutton Church, leave the village on a farm track heading north, passing the village hall. After 500m, pass through a farm gate, turn right, and follow a grass track around deciduous woodland.

Follow the track as it descends past an old mill. Turn right and head uphill to the public road.

Turn left to go down to Hutton Bridge. (Originally built in 1837 with a state-of-the-art iron tension-rod design; the piers are original).

Retrace your steps up the minor road for 1km to a T-junction.

Optional extension: 350m from the bridge, follow the sign for Clarabad Farm. Keep the Whiteadder on your left. Follow the track through the woods to the farm (working farm). Join the farm road to a T-junction.

Turn right and follow the minor road between Hutton and Paxton for 1.5km back to the village.

Alternatively, at the wooden signpost, follow a path around the fields for views of the Cheviot Hills before returning to the village.
