Hoddom Bridge to Solway Firth

Walking Route

Hoddom Bridge to Solway Firth

Walking

This is one of five sections of the Annandale Way. It follows the River Annan all the way to Annan and the Solway Firth.

On the far side of Hoddom Bridge on the B723 (OS Map 322) step through the stile on the right and follow the riverside path past Old Hoddom Churchyard and a number of Fishing shelters untl you cross the Mein Water by a new footbridge. There are sometimes rather inquisitive cattle in this field however they'll keep their distance. This is the Way's closest approach to the small town of Ecclefechan (birthplace of Thomas Carlyle) - if you're planning on staying, turn left on the far side of the bridge and head up to the minor road.

Continuing on the Way, head along the bank uphill slightly, past a farm and return to the riverside heading towards the splendid Brydekirk stone bridge. Cross the bridge turning left before the Brig Inn (opening times vary) and follow sign markers towards Annan. Walking through varied woodland with the river on your left, after 1km you'll notice Rabbit Island mid-stream - this river split then rejoins as one - you'll then pass the Diamond Jubilee Suspension Bridge (1897) and then a weir. At this point you are opposite Annandale Whisky Distillery (not visible, but trust us, it's there) - just after you pass under the road bridge go left over Cuthbertson Memorial Footbridge, turn left at the waymarker to go up a concrete ramp to a car park near a road. For Annandale Distillery, turn left on the road and for the Annandale Way, turn right on a naarrow path that goes around the back of Annan Athletic Football Club stadium, then back onto the riverbank. Then into Annan at the Blue Bell Pub.

Just 3 miles (5 km) to go to the end of the Way at Newbiebarns on the Solway Firth and if you are staying overnight in Annan, you may wish to leave most of your heavy stuff at your accommodation in the town at this point and then continue to Newbiebarns as you'll have to retrace your steps back to Annan.

From Annan High Street, descend steps at the road bridge crossing the Millennium footbridge, then under the railway bridge and across a narrow stone footbridge. Approaching Newbie village, don't be tempted by the gate straight ahead but bear right uphill on the road past the house. The path will then lead you out along the narrow raised bank to reach Barnkirk Point and here, the River Annan flows into the Solway Firth. You've done it.
