Borderloop4 – Peebles

Please note. This route is only signposted clockwise. Take the B7062 following the River Tweed towards Innerleithen and then on past Traquair House before heading south on the B709 towards the Gordon Arms.

Head west on the A708 passing St Mary’s Loch and on past Megget Reservoir. You will pass the highest point of this route here before descending towards Talla Reservoir. At Tweedsmuir turn north on the A701. Take care as this road can sometimes be busy. Head north towards Broughton before heading back towards Peebles via Dreva and Dawyck Botanic Garden and on past Stobo on the B712. Take a loop to the south of Cademuir Hill before returning to Peebles.

There is much to see on this scenic route. Peebles with wonderful shopping for locals and visitors is situated on the banks of the River Tweed which flows all the way to Berwick upon Tweed. Take a stroll along the river or pay a visit to the Tweeddale Musuem & Gallery before heading off. Mountain biking fans may wish to pop into 7stanes Glentress for some world class mountain bike trails, or others may want to visit the Visitor Centre to learn more about the Tweed Valley Forest Park. In Innerleithen you can visit St Ronan’s Well Visitor Centre and Robert Smail’s Workshop. More mountain biking can be found at 7stanes Innerleithen. Scotland’s oldest inhabited house can be found at Traquair. This route then heads south towards the Gordon Arms before opening out at St Mary’s Loch. The route then climbs towards Megget and Talla Reservoirs where the highest point of the Borderloop can be found. From Tweedsmuir head north towards Broughton heart of John Buchan country, the author of The 39 Steps. Stop off at Dawyck Botanic Garden before heading back towards Peebles.

This loop has the highest point on the Borderloop at 450m between Megget and Talla Reservoirs, and with it there are some long climbs and descents (one very steep).
