Traquair House

Visitor Attractions
Traquair House. This is the oldest inhabited house in Scotland and has many connections with the Jacobite Cause.

About Traquair House

The Jacobite Cause is when Stuart heirs attempted to reimpose Catholic monarchy against the House of Hanover. The Jacobite dispute firms the background to Buchan’s novels "Midwinter" and "An Old Lady of Lost Years". Tradition has it that the Bear Gates at Traquair will never be opened until a Stuart monarch sits on the throne again.
