About Tonderghie Mary Mine

At Tonderghie there is evidence of 18th and 19th Century copper mining and a vein of barite with some copper mineralisation has been exposed in coastal cliffs. There are two in-filled mine shafts, a collapsed adit level and some areas of spoil. There is also an undated opencast working on the vein itself. This has recently been investigated by National Museums Scotland, to examine whether there is evidence that the mine was also worked in prehistoric times. At Tonderghie farm, there is a round building attached to the barn, which is a fine example of a horse-powered threshing machine.
