About Kirkudbright Tolbooth

Dating back to 1629, Kirkcudbright Tolbooth held many accused of Covenanting crimes. Traditionally prisoners would have been kept in tolbooth gaols within each burgh, and Kirkcudbright tolbooth was no exception. As well as Covenanters, the tolbooth also held accused witches. People in debt could be imprisoned as could children over 12.
