About The Waterloo Monument

This striking landmark stands atop Peniel Heugh, a prominent hill offering expansive views of the surrounding Roxburghshire countryside.

The original structure was designed by William Burn, but after its collapse, it was redesigned and completed by celebrated architect Archibald Elliot. Although the monument sits on private land, it is accessible to walkers via a marked trail starting at the Harestanes Visitor Centre. The scenic route leads up Peniel Heugh, located between Ancrum and Nisbet.

Inside the monument is a spiral staircase with 226 steps, leading to a wooden balcony that encircles the top of the tower. The inside of the monument is not currently open to the public.
