About The Catrail

The Catrail is a linear earthwork that runs from Robert's Linn, a burn flowing into the Slitrig Water, westward. It ends north-westward at the head of the Dean Burn, a tributary of the Borthwick Water. It is about 18.5 km long and consists of a ditch and bank. It is discontinuous, but still considered a single structure due to the similar ground profile on each section to section. The Catrail cuts across the upper Teviot Valley, separating the low-lying farmland to the north-east around Hawick in Teviotdale from the hillier land to the south-west.
