About Sanquhar Declarations Monument

The Sanquhar Declaration monument mark the spot in which Michael Cameron, in the presence of his brother, the Covenanter leader Richard Cameron, read out his speech disavowing allegiance to Charles II and the government of Scotland, in 1680. He did so accompanied by twenty armed men in the public square of Sanquhar, in the name of "true Protestant and Presbyterian interest". The demonstration was symbolic and was one of the catalysts for the first series of events that led to the Glorious Revolution and the end of the reign of the House of Stuart.
