About Sanquhar Castle

The ruined Sanquhar Castle, located on the southern approach to Sanquhar, was built by the Crichton family in the 13th century. It was visited by many notable figures including Robert the Bruce, William Wallace and Mary Queen of Scots.

In the mid 17th century, the Crichtons sold the castle to Sir William Douglas, 1st Duke of Queensberry, from which it began to fall to ruin. Restoration was attempted in 1895 when John Crichton-Stuart, 3rd Marquess of Bute bought the castle. Today some more structurally sound sections remain. However, this restoration stopped following the death of the Marquess in 1900.
