About Robert Burns in Dumfries

Robert Burns moved to Dumfriesshire in 1788 to take over Ellisland Farm before moving into Dumfries to work as an excise officer. Burns spent the last eight years of his life in Dumfries moving with his young expanding family, immersing himself in the local culture, frequented pubs (or Howff) that still stand today, and attending mass every Sunday.

Dying at the tender age of 37 Burns’ still left his mark on the town of Dumfries and the surrounding area of Nithsdale. Learn about Robert Burns’ time in the town, exploring the landscape that Burns’ called home.
