Paxton House is a Georgian mansion overlooking the River Tweed set in 80 acres of grounds on the border of England and Scotland 4 miles from Berwick upon Tweed.

About Paxton House

Overlooking the beautiful River Tweed, Paxton House lies at the heart of 80 acres of riverside, woodland, parkland and gardens. Paxton House was built between 1758 and 1767, to the design of John and James Adam. This Palladian country house boasts a fine collection of over 100 pieces of Chippendale furniture, Regency furniture by William Trotter and a magnificent collection of 18th Century costume brought back by Patrick Home from his time at the Court of Frederick the Great. The imposing picture gallery built by Robert Reid in 1814, houses over 70 paintings from the National Galleries of Scotland. Here you will see masterpieces by Raeburn, Wilkie and Lawrence alongside many works of local interest.
Visitors can enjoy a variety of walks and trails through the gardens and grounds or take a boat trip up the river Tweed, which goes under the historic Chain Bridge. (subject to tides and weather.) Paxton House has a croquet lawn and 9-hole putting green, picnic areas, an adventure play park and runs a variety of children's activities.
There are two holiday lets and a 30 pitch caravan park in the Walled Garden, a quiet and restful spot from which to enjoy the local area.
With all this plus the Georgian Waterwheel, Gift Shop, Stables Restaurant, the Ellem Fishing Museum, and an ever changing event and exhibition programme, Paxton House is not just an historic country house but a fantastic day out for all the family.
