About John Paul Jones Birthplace Museum And Visitor Centre

John Paul Jones Birthplace Museum And Visitor Centre is located on the Arbigland Estate near Kirkbean in Dumfries and Galloway, Scotland.

“I wish to have no connection with any ship that does not sail fast, for I intend to go in harm’s way.”

The cottage is where John Paul Jones, hero of the American Revolutionary War and founder of the United States Navy, was born in 1747.

John Paul Jones cottage has two rooms, restored and furnished as they might have been during his childhood. An extension to the cottage houses a recreation of Jones’s cabin on his ship the “Bonhomme Richard”, here visitors can immerse themselves in seafaring days gone by.

The inviting visitor centre also boasts an interpretive exhibition on the life of ‘The Father of the American Navy’ with video presentations. There is an attractive rural picnic area offering marvellous views of the Solway and the Lake District. There is also a small cafe and shop. Children can play with the fabulous display of Playmobil Pirate ships and treasure islands and with children under 16 being admitted to the museum for free, this makes it an affordable and fun day out for families.

The John Paul Jones Birthplace Museum Trust also runs a small but beautiful Caravan Site next to the museum. It has 5 hard standing pitches all with electrical hook-up and free WiFi. The views from all pitches are stunning looking towards the Lake District mountains and the sea.
