About Innerwell Point

Innerwell, where you can turn inland by road to rejoin the B7004 and return left (southwards) towards Garlieston village, was once a landing place and salmon-fishery, which was carried out using stake nets. The fishery has long since ceased, but you may be able to see nets still set in the seabed: they were erected on wooden poles to form a barrier which traps the fish in the pocket or trap. This type of salmon fishing is traditional in the Solway Firth. All these nets rely on a behavioural characteristic of salmon, which travel along a netting barrier rather than attempt to swim through it. Heading back towards Garlieston, you may glimpse through trees, the medieval church of Kirkmadrine, in trees at Penkiln Farm, where there is also a tank-driving experience.
