Iconic Hawick Statue

About Hawick Horse

This impressive statue was unveiled in 1914 to commemorate the 400th anniversary of the skirmish at Hornshole. When the youth of the town rode out to challenge some cross-Border raiders. Despite the heroics of the young men the statue, the work of a local man, William Beattie, is universally known as the Horse.
Ogilvie learned to ride horses at a very young age and continued to love riding horses both for work and pleasure in the Borders and in Australia for the rest of his life. Many believe that his poetry about horses is the best that has ever been written so it is apt that at this site we should celebrate The Horsemen.
