About Goldielands Tower

An ancient possession of the Scotts of Buccleuch then based at Branxholme – many a night its beacon would blaze warning Branxholme of danger. Its most famous occupant was Walter Scott, known as “the Laird’s Wat” who as deputy for his Chief led the Scotts at the Raid if the Redeswire in 1575 and also took part in the famous rescue of Kinmont Willie from Carlisle Castle. Tradition tells us that the last occupant of the tower was hung from his own gateway for stealing cattle.
