Dunskirloch Fort

Ancient, Monuments & Statues, Roman & Iron Age, Ruins
Dunskirloch Promontory Fort is defended by a natural deep cleft in the rocks which serves as a ditch. It is one of several promontory forts on the Rhins coast.

About Dunskirloch Fort

Dunskirloch dates to the Iron Age and many similar forts can be seen along the Rhins coast. The builders of this fort may have deepened a natural trench which gave them a highly defensible position. There are still the remains of a rampart or wall, which encloses a grassy interior with a circular mound.
The fort is situated just North East of Corsewall Lighthouse, designed by Robert Stevenson in 1817, and complete with keepers' cottages - now used as holiday accommodation. It marks the northern tip of the Rhinns and it is still a highlight to see the ferries rounding the head, passing to and from Ireland.
The fort is situated on the Rhins of Galloway Coastal Path which has been recently extended to encompass a spectacular long-distance walking route all the way round the North and South Rhins peninsulas.
