Historic Abbey ruins with the graves of Scott and Douglas Haig

About Dryburgh Abbey

Dryburgh Abbey is located in a secluded but beautiful spot beside the River Tweed. It was established in 1150 by monks of the Premonstratensian Order. The ruins are both beautiful and atmospheric. Buried in the Abbey church are Sir Walter Scott and Field Marshall Douglas Haig, Commander in chief of the British Expeditionary Force for most of the First World War. His family home was at Bemersyde, not far from Dryburgh.
Ogilvie’s poem Dryburgh is more of a tribute to Scott than a description of Dryburgh.
