About Creetown

Creetown is a small seaside town located near the head of Wigtown Bay. Founded in the 18th century, it is a former fishing village with a population of about 750 people. It was originally named Ferrytown of Cree, as it was once one end of a ferry route that took pilgrims across the River Cree estuary to the shrine of St Ninian at Whithorn. The local football team, formed in 1895, are known as "The Ferrytoun", because of this. Creetown is also home to the award-winning Gem Rock Museum.

There are granite quarries close to Creetown that were formerly served by the Portpatrick and Wigtownshire Railway. This lead to growth in the industry from about 1830 to 1900, and stone from this area was used to build parts of the Liverpool docks and other public works
