About Cessford Castle

Cessford Castle is a large ruined mid-15th century castle near the village of Cessford. Sitting between Jedburgh and Kelso, Cessford was built by Andrew Ker, an ancestor of Robert Ker, 1st Earl of Roxburghe, and of the Dukes of Roxburghe. Located only eight miles from the border with England it is not surprising that Cessford Castle was designed to offer protection, including that against a full-scale siege. In 1607 Sir Robert Ker, later the 1st Earl of Roxburghe, abandoned Cessford Castle for more comfortable accommodation. The family seat is now Floors Castle.
