About Branxholme Castle

Branxholme Castle was long the main castle of the Scotts of Buccleuch. Sir Walter Scott of Buccleuch, known with good cause as Wicked Wat', was murdered in the High Street in Edinburgh by the Kerrs with whom the Scotts were almost permanently at feud. This happened in 1552 and his widow was the Wizard Lady of Branksome in the Lay of the Last Minstrel.

'The feast was over in Branksome tower,
And the Ladye had gone to
her secret bower;
Her wer, that was guarded by word and spell,
Deadly to hear and deadly to tell.’
Sir Walter Scott
